Originating from a poem by M.K. Wilde, the quote "you will finally understand why storms are named after people" went so hard that it directly influenced Blackout's name haha-
My first exposure to it though was from a tumblr screenshot ( https://www.reddit.com/r/tumblr/comments/7w1zor/why_storms_are_named_after_people/ ), which combines M.K. Wilde's and Caitlyn Siehl's writing from what I can gather online?
Storms are named after people, so someone as destructive as Blackout got named after a storm. I went through a list of storms / natural disasters and picked one with a name I liked - Typhoon Vera called out to me.
In universe, Vera took her name after a figure from a theatre performance. The "Rising Vera" was an antagonistic supernatural entity in the play, and their dance number was the spark that inspired Blackout to pursue dancing and become passionate about it.
When she was encouraged to finally explore her identity, she decided to name herself after the dancer that captured her heart all those years ago.

I've made my own version of the poem to better fit Vera's story ^-^ I'll transcribe it here because I'm very confident in Android blurring the image due to the canvas size
"when the dust settles,
debris carving into the garden
we played in as kids,
and when smoke rises,
lazily, from the kitchen that once
filled our stomachs with laughter,
-- when I finally leave,
you will understand
why storms are named after people"

•Forgot to say this, but Vera is a REALLY COOL character!!! I like the pose you did, like she spun to make a little fire typhoon as a defensive shield?? Also her name just gave me an idea, wait for it

•
•THIS IS SO COOL I love her I love her I love her, the fire!! The pose!! Honestly I would have never guessed her name was Vera

•
•woaa what this is actually sick, the composition of the poem and then introducing the name was cool- (the way I read it in my head it sound very epic I guess)
•
•SICK BEANS WHAT A COOL ORIGIN BOTH IN LORE AND IN REAL LIFE!!! SICK ART TOO AND THE POEM HELL YEAH NAILED IT
•
•WAAAH THIS IS SO AWESOME!! i love the origin of her name so much thats so cool! and this ILLUSTRATIONNNN the colors and textures are everything and i love the pose AUGH this is just so cool everything goes so well together
•
•This is sick, everything's so dynamic and has so much power behind it!! I love the thought you put behind the name, Vera is so cool! One last note but I love way the drawing is burning away at the edges and the effects you did to communicate that. Super cool all around :)
•
•YAYYYY THIS IS SO COOL AGHH!!!! THE FIREEEEEE IS SO COOLLLL AND THE LIGHTING??????? EXTREMELY WELL DONE!!! Love this so so much!!!!
•
•I really wanted to make sure I got my sources down because the poems weren't mine to begin with and it deserved to be credited since it kickstarted so much of Vera's development. The actual name "Vera" is Slavic in origin, and slightly ironic since Vera neither has faith in others nor is she truthful XD
Also I'm still going to refer to Vera as V and Blackout as well :D I'm aware it makes it needlessly complex but it helps me against sounding repetitive haha XD
