Déjà vuIt’s the year 2134. Most adults have stopped looking at the small things with wonder, only a handful of dreamers still do.
Even children have grown used to the rush, their minds tethered to glowing screens and endless information. The world moves too fast; no one pauses to breathe with the Earth anymore.
That’s why this moment matters most.
On the rooftop of a house far from the city’s chaos, two silhouettes share the cold breath of an autumn night. In the distance, skyscrapers cut through the haze, but up here, the air feels clearer.
Owen and his daughter, Harper, sit side by side. She’s five, curious, stubborn, and endlessly fascinated by the stars. Tonight she begged to look for aliens and spaceships.
So Owen does what he knows best, he talks. He tells her about constellations from the old books he loved as a child.
Growing up in the city, light pollution had swallowed the night sky most nights; real stars were something he only ever rarely could stare at. Now, seeing them shimmer above so bright feels like magic.
“There it is,” he says softly. “Cassiopeia.”
Harper’s eyes light up. She points, she laughs, she asks question after question! About aliens, planets, shooting stars, and Saturn (her favourite, for now). Every word makes Owen’s heart swell.
And for a fleeting second, he feels something strange. Almost familiar.
Like he’s five years old again, sitting beside his mother... though that never happened. He never had that night, that sky. The memory isn’t real.
But through Harper, it feels like it could have been.
He exhales, a quiet smile crossing his face now. The feeling settles deep in his chest, gentle and whole.
A memory that never existed, finally made a little more real.
A moment of peace in a world that forgot how to stop and look up.
